Where is your next adventure? (Company/School and Role) This fall I began working towards my Ph.D. at Rowan University’s Molecular Cell Biology and Neuroscience program.
What are you most looking forward to in this new role? I am looking forward to conducting research on neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. I am specifically interested in investigating the stagewise effects these diseases have on the electrophysiology of specific brain regions.
What was the process like of landing this job/next opportunity? Acceptance to a graduate program in the biomedical field is a long process. Applications for fall enrollment are due the previous December. The applications are very individualized with a multitude of essay questions specific to each program. Once you’ve completed the applications expect a few weeks before you hear back from schools. The next step would be attending interviews if requested. After another few weeks you’ll receive a decision letter and if accepted make sure to enjoy your campus tour!
Who helped you during your job search/graduate school process? During my time at Roger Williams University I was fortunate enough to have a multitude of mentors that assisted me in the graduate school process. Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Christopher Burtner was instrumental in guiding me through the application process. Providing assistance selecting schools, writing essays and communicating with the programs. In addition, Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr. Hum Nath Bhandari was a fantastic mentor helping me navigate questions regarding my mathematical and computer science background.
What advice do you have to students who are in the process of finding a job/going to graduate school? To the students who are looking to attend graduate school in the biomedical field it’s important to start the process as soon as possible. The applications can be very time consuming as they must be written individually. Take advantage of any and all CV building opportunities. I found that programs were specifically interested in the amount of lab research experience I had. Going above and beyond with experiences such as summer research fellowships and senior thesis writing can help you stand out. Be sure to utilize the professional advice available to you on a daily basis. Take full advantage of all the amazing professors on campus and visiting professionals giving seminars. Personally, I put a lot of effort into practicing my interview skills. Understanding what kind of questions may be asked and the best way to answer them is truly a game changer.
