Career Planning Seminar

Career Planning Seminar (CPS)

The purpose of the Career Planning Seminar (CPS) is to introduce students to some of the essential skills and knowledge they’ll need to successfully navigate their career journey at Roger Williams and beyond. Content for the course has been developed in collaboration with RWU faculty and industry professionals and is based on career readiness competencies identified by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

By successfully completing all eight CPS modules, students will be provided with the skills, tools, and resources to confidently navigate the path through college and into the world of work. Specifically, students completing CPS will:

  • Wonder about themselves and the world of work through self-reflection activities that guide the development of a personal mission and cohesive professional brand.
  • Act in the direction of their curiosity by using university resources to engage in career exploration activities like networking, informational interviews, and occupational exploration.
  • Venture into the world of work by learning how to conduct a successful job and/or internship search and prepare essential materials like resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles.
  • Engage in their local and global community in ways that align with their personal mission and professional brand, and promote the development of an interculturally competent professional identity.
  • When do I take CPS?

All rising sophomore students are automatically enrolled in this online course through Bridges and all students are strongly encouraged to complete the course in their sophomore year. The course can be completed in one semester or over the course of several terms.

Any interested student, regardless of class year, can enroll in CPS by adding “CPS 101” in Roger Central during registration.

If you plan to complete an internship for credit at any point during your time at Roger, you must complete CPS at least one semester prior to the term in which you will complete your internship.

  • How does the course work? What are the deadlines?

CPS is fully asynchronous and self-paced, meaning there are no in-person or virtual meetings for the course and students can complete assignments on their own timeline.

For the Fall 2023 semester, all assignments for the Career Planning Seminar are due at 11:59 PM on Thursday, December 7. The fall course is available beginning in August 2023. Students are strongly encouraged to work on the course throughout the semester and not wait until the end to begin working on assignments.

  • How can I get support with my assignments?

Staff from the Center for Career & Professional Development are available throughout each academic term to support students in completing CPS and provide feedback on their progress in the course.

CPS Teaching Assistants host drop-in hours each week in the CCPD Career Lab (GHH 117). They are also available for consultation via email. See below for your TAs’ contact information & office hours schedule.

  • Am I required to finish CPS?

Every student at Roger Williams is strongly encouraged to complete the Career Planning Seminar in their sophomore year. The course can be completed over the course of multiple semesters – if you do not finish the course in Fall 2023, for example, you will be automatically rolled into the Spring 2024 course and so on.

The Career Planning Seminar is a requirement for any student who will complete an internship for credit during their time at Roger Williams. To see if your major requires you to complete an internship, please see the webpage for Internship Requirements By Major. Note that CPS must be completed at least one semester prior to the term in which you intend to complete your internship.
