Hawks Hired highlights the accomplishments of soon to be RWU graduates as they finalize the next steps on their career journeys. Lily has recently accepted a role as an Associate Accountant at Fidelity Investments. Read on to learn more about her next chapter following graduation.
What is your major/was your major at RWU? While attending Roger Williams University, I was a double major in both accounting and finance.
Graduation year? I will graduate in May 2023.
Where is your next adventure? Starting in July 2023, I will be working at Fidelity Investments as an associate accountant in the Boston office.
What was the process like of landing this job/next opportunity? My job searching process started with finding an internship for the summer going into my senior year. After attending the career fair, I was able to talk to multiple companies and narrow down what I thought I’d like to do in the future. I knew some adults that worked at Fidelity, so I decided to apply for an accounting internship, and after several interviews, I was granted the position for the summer. After that, I was asked to extend my internship into the fall with a part-time position and following that, on the first day of senior year, Fidelity called and offered me a full-time position following graduation. The process went very smoothly due to the fact that I already had the internship beforehand. I loved what I did during my internship, so this decision was a no-brainer for me. Having an internship during college has definitely provided me with real-world experience that you cannot gain in a classroom setting, and in the long run, made the job search very less stressful.
Who helped you during your job search/graduate school process? During the job/internship search, I had done some of my own digging to better figure out what I would like to do following graduation. Many of the career advisors including Rena Piller-Thurston and Mary Santoro, helped along the way with resume questions and modifications, as well as guiding me through the internship process after obtaining the role.
What advice do you have to students who are in the process of finding a job/going to graduate school? Research, research, research. What helped most during the job/internship process was just looking through the abundance of jobs out there. There are so many jobs out there that we have no idea about. After doing some digging, I became aware of how many possibilities there are, and it may spark an interest or coincide well with a passion. The hardest part is figuring out what you want to do, and less about finding where you want to work. Once you can narrow down what you’d like to do in the future, it makes the process of finding a job much more confined and easier to find places in which you’d like to apply.
