Announcing: Introduction to Design

Announcing: Introduction to Design was originally published on Springboard.

Today, we’re happy to announce the launch of a new Springboard course, Introduction to Design.

Design is one of the tech industry’s fastest-growing professional fields. Demand for accomplished designers working in UI (user interface) and UX (user experience) is expected to grow by 14.9% over the next 10 years.

This growth is not news to us here at Springboard. UX design was one of our first online bootcamps; we launched it in 2014 with the hope of giving our students real, hands-on experience in this growing field. Today, our UX Design Career Track and our UI/UX Design Career Track offer a deep dive into UI and UX design with additional mentorship and support, including one-on-one video calls from industry leaders and the chance to work with a real company on several portfolio projects—all with Springboard’s one-of-a-kind job guarantee.

But as we listened to feedback from our students and alumni, we realized something important. Diving headfirst into a nine-month-long design bootcamp is intimidating—not to mention a significant investment of time, money, and resources.

Introduction to Design was inspired by those conversations.

It’s a short, four-week course for anyone who wants to learn more about the basics of design without investing too much time or money upfront. If you are new to the design field, it will give you a chance to road-test a new career and see if it’s the right fit, and to get a taste for online learning in the process.

The best part? There is no application process: just a one-time tuition fee of $490. In addition, we’re launching the course with a special introductory price of $349 for a limited time.

Is Introduction to Design right for me?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, then Springboard’s Introduction to Design course is right for you.

  • Have you always wondered if your skillset would be put to better use as a UI or UX designer?
  • Are you interested in design and online bootcamps but haven’t had the time or money to commit to either before?
  • Do you need to brush up on basic UI/UX design skills for your current role?

What will Introduction to Design cover?

Here’s a brief snapshot of what the four-week course will cover.

  • An overview of some basic design skills including Sketch or Figma (your choice)
  • Work on design exercises and an end-to-end project, where you’ll:
    • Conduct research

    • Create a user persona

    • Sketch possible solutions

    • Create low-fidelity wireframes using Sketch or Figma

    • Build high-fidelity designs using Sketch or Figma

    • Choose to conduct usability tests

What can I expect to get out of Introduction to Design?

As with all Springboard bootcamps, Introduction to Design will be a 100% online and self-paced learning experience. Here’s what else you can expect from the course:

  • One-on-one mentorship from a design expert who will provide assistance, career advice, and insight into the day-to-day life of a designer via weekly calls (four in total)
  • A one-on-one call with a career coach, who will answer questions about the design industry and help you pick the best career path for your skillset and interests
  • Hands-on, exercise-based learning
  • Access to a dedicated student advisor, a teaching assistant, and student operations support
  • Access to a community of aspiring designers and design experts, including weekly “office hours” with mentors and UI/UX Career Track alumni

Ok, I’m sold. How do I sign up and what’s it going to cost me?

Here are a few important details you need to know before signing up for Introduction to Design.

  • There is no application process for this course: anyone is free to enroll as long as you can pay the tuition fee. This is normally $490 — but will be $349 for a limited time
  • We will run a new cohort every Monday, starting on June 22, 2020
  • The total estimated workload is 50 hours, expected to be completed over four weeks
  • You will have access to four mentor calls (one per week), as well as lifelong access to the curriculum should you need longer than four weeks to complete the course
  • You may complete the course faster if you have previous design experience or are able to dedicate additional time to the course material
