Senior, Nicole Black (Cybersecurity & Networking major) completed a Cybersecurity internship during the Summer 2023 semester with Raytheon Technologies. Read on to learn about her experience!
What was your internship? Cybersecurity Intern at Raytheon Technologies.
Why were you initially interested in this internship? I was interested in this internship because I wanted hands on experience in cybersecurity.
How did you find your internship? I heard about the internship opportunity from a professor in the cybersecurity department.
What did you do as part of your internship? I attended staff meetings with the cyber department, shadowed and assisted Information Security Officer’s (ISSO’s), audited a Windows Information System on my own, and created a user aide for new users at Raytheon. Auditing involved detecting Information System security violations.
Has this internship helped you work towards your future career goals? If so, how? Yes, it has helped me learn about compliance in the defense industry and auditing. After concluding my internship, I was offered a full-time position after graduation.
What was your biggest lesson/takeaway from the internship? My biggest lesson from the internship is the importance of being able to identify insider threats.
What advice would you give to someone interested in a similar internship opportunity? I would tell someone interesting working as an Information System Security Officer (ISSO) in a DoD environment to learn how to use Splunk, Ivanti, and vulnerability scanners. I would also tell them to learn about the NIST Risk Management Framework.
