How to Prepare for This Year’s Virtual Internship and Career Fair

Are you planning on attending this semester’s virtual internship and career fair? Whether you are looking for an internship, a job or even just exploring your options for the near future the career fair can shine light on many different options for you. It is important when attending any career fair that you are prepared and ready to engage with employers. There are a few ways you can be prepared and ready to impress any company.

The first crucial thing to set yourself up for success would be to register for the career fair and to simply plan on attending. In order to do this all you have to do is log into Handshake using your RWU single sign on and then go to events, click on career fair, select the fair you wish to attend and then select register.

The next step would be to update your resume. The CCPD offers free resume reviews for this particular reason. All you have to do is send a copy of your resume to resumes@g.rwu.edu or drop into our Career Lab for peer edits. You can also make an appointment with your Career Advisor via Handshake who can help you perfect your resume.

Another step before attending the virtual career fair would be to update or build your Handshake profile. This is a great way to make employers interested in YOU! It is important to make sure your resume is also visible on your profile. In order to do this you would scroll to documents, click manage documents, upload documents and then click select visible on profile.

Something important to keep in mind before the career fair would be knowing what the company and employers you will be meeting with are all about and what they are looking for. In order to do this it is crucial that you do some research beforehand. Before the career fair you will be able to choose group sessions or one on one sessions. Based on what the employers bios are like, you will be able to choose what interests you the most. The CCPD offers programs such as, The RunDown: How to Prepare for the Virtual Fair, or as always, you can make an appointment with your career advisor for more support and any questions you may have.

Now you will be ready to sign up and register for either group sessions, one on one sessions or both, based on your interests. You can do this by selecting the fair you want to attend, clicking available sessions and then choosing from the list of employers who will be attending.

On the day of the virtual career fair it is important that you set up your space in an efficient way. You should be meeting with employers in a clean, quiet room with a strong wifi connection. A white, clear background always works best so that you are the main focus. Dress professionally and arrive on time, or even better early, to the fair. During the scheduled time a “join video” option will be enabled.

After the virtual fair you should create thank you notes and send them to any employers you met with that day. Developing any further questions or comments would also make you an even better candidate. Then, apply to positions through Handshake!
